So you are confirming that the code snippet  _should_ sum the
preceding-siblings' span attribute?

    This does not work

it is the right thing so

   Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

presumably something in part of the code that you dodn't show us. eg
current node isn't what you expected, or something to do with
namespaces, or the phase of the moon or...
