It's a question of brackets, you want to get all <objectid.contactid>
and then select the first, so use:

(//objectid.contactid)[1]

Or, a little less obscurely,


/descendant::objectid.contactid[1]

(The difference is that the first collects all objectid.contactid nodes that are children of the root or of some descendant of the root, and takes the first. The second takes the first objectid.contactid descendant of the root. They are the same node.)
