You don't have an img tag in your feed (and so no img element node in your input tree. You just have teh characters < i m g I gather this kind of crippled input is typical in RSS and you probably can't change your feed, in which case XSLT 1 isn't really ideal for the job as it's designed to handle element markup not plain text, however <xsl:template match="description[contains(.,'img')]"> <xsl:value-of select="substring-before(substring-after(.,'src="'),'"')"/> </xsl:template> may do the job in simple cases.
