Think of a mode (or name) of a template in xslt like te name of a function in C or most other compiled languages, the names need to be known at compile time. Since your stylesheet has a fixed (usually small) set of modes your top level template can have a simple <xsl:choose> <xsl:when test="mode"='a'"><xsl:apply-templates mode="a"/></xsl:when> <xsl:when test="mode"='b'"><xsl:apply-templates mode="b"/></xsl:when> ...
