I would write it as follows

/data/stuff/*[self::a|self::b]

In this simple case here it is actually longer than the method you have
working but for a more complicated path such as

/data/stuff/stuff/stuff/a|/data/stuff/stuff/stuff/b

it would be shorter. i.e.

/data/stuff/stuff/stuff/*[self::a|self::b]

In my XSL to get sections 'a' and 'b' I would have thought something like:

/data/stuff/(a|b)

would work but the only thing I can get to work is:

/data/stuff/a|/data/stuff/b

which just seems too long winded for there not to be a better way to
express it.
