Your template should generate whole row (tr) nodes at a time, no attempt to produce the linear syntax of a start tag in one place and an end tag somewhere else. That is almost inevitable if you use d-o-e and chain the output of xslt from one process to another. The "tags" are just text not elements. they only appear as elements if you linearise teh entire document and then re-parse it. So it works if xslt outputs a file which is reparsed later but doesn't work if you pass the in memory tree directly.
