I didn't try Perl specifically, but if you use Xalan-J http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/ you can use a lot of scripting languages to extend XSLT: I've tested with success JavaScript. Look at http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/extensions.html for more informations. You need to install the proper interpreter, the Perl one seems to be ActivePerl from http://www.activestate.com/.
