In the stylesheet I give the document nodeset a handle like this:

<xsl:variable name="data" select="document(contact1.xml)"/>

Then I refer to bits of information in the contact file, like this:

<xsl:value-of select="$data/*/organization"/>

But these lines doesn't generate any output.

You forgot how the document() resolves its argument(s). Give it a string, as in document('contact1.xml'). It's looking for a set of child elements named contact1.xml, not finding any, so returning an empty node set.

It's an easy gotcha.
