Funny that you mention that, because most people that I know regard the ternary operator as hard to read, awkward, and generally bad form. :)
I can understand why XSL works the way it does though. This is just my first time ever dealing with a language that isn't like C at all.

Maybe it'll help you to think of the following C/C++/Java construct:
y = (x == a? c : d)
