Caught you out David - it doesn't happen often. The value of <xsl:variable name="g"/> IS an empty string. Third bullet of XSLT section 11.2. Though I'm struggling at the moment to find any way of showing that this makes any observable difference, especially in the absence of the node-set() extension!
