I think you are quite right, there is not an exact mapping between XML and UML class diagram. But iot is quite close, and we have found the UML class diagrams really easy to review, and to use as an aid for constructing XML documents. Plus UML is such a widely known standard, there is a good deal of tool support for it. just a minor point ...
