In addition, JVMs running on 32-bit OSes are limited to about 1.5 to 2 Gig
of heap regardless of amount of RAM installed. The exact amount varies based
on OS and other processes running, but for Windows is typically about 1.2
Gig. 

64-bit OSes allow essentially unlimited heap space (at least 6Gig or more).
