I agree w/ Barton Wright on suggestion #1 -- it's a great idea. Yes,
I know cmd-/ issues the Surround with [previous] command, but
nonetheless, I often issue cmd-e before I remember I meant cmd-/.

If you mean ctl-opt-x to invoke the Delete Element Tags command, it
works for me. (Also oXygen 9.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.)
