Microsoft OOXML documents to DITA projects?

Wed Oct 09, 2013 4:57 pm

Your 15.1 new features announcement says "you can convert Microsoft OOXML documents to DITA projects".

Would you mind telling us how to do that? I can't find anything about it in the user guide or in the user interface.

Thanks.
Tim.

Hi Tim,

The new feature we added in 15.1 you are quoting refers to the fact that we fully integrated Eliot Kimber's DITA For Publishers Plugins, one of which allows for converting DOCX to DITA content.
How is this done? You open the DOCX in Oxygen (it will open in the Archive Browser) and then open the "document.xml" from it. If you press the "Configure Transformation Scenario" toolbar button you will see you have a predefined transformation scenario for it called "DOCX DITA". This ANT scenario runs the build file:

OXYGEN_INSTALL_DIR/frameworks/dita/DITA-OT/plugins/net.sourceforge.dita4publishers.word2dita/build-word2dita.xml

over the DOCX archive and should produce a DITA project with a Map and multiple topics. But it may also need some reconfiguring in order to map DOCX styles to DITA content. This would be a solution which could also be run automatically with scripts because it is based on the DITA OT and the D4P plugins.

But even in the past you had alternatives:

Open the DOCX in MS Word, select all, copy and then paste in a DITA topic opened in Oxygen. Oxygen will attempt to convert the equivalent HTML content set in the clipboard by MS Word to DITA content.
Or another advice I sometimes give is to open the OOXML in Libre Office and save it as Docbook, then convert the Docbook to DITA.
Or save the DOCX to HTML even from MS Word, import it in Oxygen to make it wellformed XHTML and there are also pre-configured transformation scenarios for XHTML to DITA topic, concept or task.
