We just got the answer from the W3C WG:
https://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=9065#c4 :

The Working Groups decided, at their joint teleconference on
2014-04-01, that this proposed feature is beyond the scope of the 3.1
suite of specifications. Therefore, this feature will not be included
in version 3.1. However, we recognize the value and requirements for
the feature, so we agree that it will be reconsidered for a future
version of XPath, should one be developed.

So, either we wait for XPath 4+ (if it will be decided there will be
such), or we develop this function ourselves.

Florent, what is the formal way to do this as part of EXPath ?
