<xsl:value-of select="//node()[1]/node()/name()"/>

//node()[1] selects every node in the document that is the first child of something.

so

//node()[1]/node()

selects every node whose parent node is the first child of something.

so

//node()[1]/node()/name()

returns the sequence of strings of the names of all those nodes.
