It may help you to understand what's going on to realise that there are
no loops in XSLT...

xsl:for-each select="invoice" is really like
xsl:apply-templates select="invoice"
but with the template to handle an invoice inline inside the for-each...

xsl:for-each takes as input a sequence of items, and produces a
corresponding output list using the body of the for-each for each item
in its input.

If this is gibberish, squirrel it away for later, or discard it and let
it return perhaps one day when you are sitting on the dock, fishing-rod
and tweed hat by your side.
