I am one of them, which is facing the similar problem with xml in
InDesign, especially when it comes to editing XML (structure) in InDesign
and roundtripping back to original with updated corrections.

The biggest challenge is when changes are made to structure of imported
XML (head1 changes to head 2 or head 2 changes to head3 and so on) when
designer/compositor rarely understand XML and does the correction in it.
Most of the time they are least interested in structure and more concern
about the view leading to rework in correcting exported xml back to normal
shape.

We are encouraging our designers with basic XML training to understand the
XML in InDesign but if they try to work in that direction they loose
creativity and productivity. we are working on the scope of how to handle
the situation but the challenges are big.

Dorothy says:

If you would like to see a tiny sample of XML and non-XML content in
full color combined in InDesign, drop me a line and I will send you a
two-page spread in InDesign CS3 (Win) and the output PDF

Would appreciate to look into that. May be we can discuss this one to one
without disturbing the spirit of the forum :-)

Best,
PC
