A Follow up:

I replaced my XSLT processor with Saxon 6.5.5 (I know, I know, I should get the spiffy XSLT 2.0 machine that is 9.1.0.2 but I have been instructed to keep it in an XSLT 1.0 thing) and all of your various suggestions started to work. (Nice!)

Then I went and got the latest Xalan (2.7.1 from http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/) and tried it. Right back to the same issues. (Not so nice.)

So it looks like there is a difference in how these two implementations of XSLT 1.0 process namespace prefixes.

As an aside: Are there other implementations of XSLT 2.0 besides Saxon?? I think if I could show my group that there is more than one implementation they might be persuaded to use XSLT 2.0

although if switching you may as well switch to saxon9 and xslt3.
