Yes they were, the original posted specifically mentioned the 3rd
edition books (the two of them), and linked to the 3rd edition in his
third reference to amazon. The newer edition is

Yes, but the OP also asked about the new edition of Doug Tidwell's
book from O'Reilly:

I don't know this book but I do remember the 1.0 book. It was well
done (a reasonably good balance between coverage and manageability)
and perhaps somewhat underappreciated, given its competition (which
was both plentiful and in some cases excellent).
