After quickly looking at the Java APIs, following comes to my mind:

StringWriter sw = new StringWriter();
StreamResult sr = new StreamResult(sw);
transformer.transform(new StreamSource(sourceId), sr);
StringBuffer sb = sr.getBuffer();

This has not been tested.
