me> :<xsl:value-of select="count(f:same(../..)/name())"/> The /name() was just for debugging purposes (for use instead of count()) so that should be <xsl:value-of select="count(f:same(../..))"/> It gets the same answer of course, but you only need to count element nodes, not Qname items holding the element names.
