this sort of problem is known as "grouping" if you have xslt 2 then you
can use xsl:for-each-group, or un xslt 1 there are standard idioms such
as "muenchian grouping" see google


<xsl:for-each-group select="file/error" group-by="@message">
: message: <xsl:value-of select="@message"/> (<xsl:value-of select="count(current-group())"/> times)
</xsl:for-each-group>
