<xsl:template match="person">
so here you are matching each person element

which means that @man can only select one attribute, so sum(@man) just
sums that one item.

You want to put the code in the template matching the parent of person
and then do
<xsl:value-of select="sum(person/@man)"/>

so you select all the attributes.
