standard xslt1 can't define xpath functions so in xslt1 you couldn't use
a single path if you can't use an off the shelf function. So you'd need
to do a recursive template call more or less like the first solution you
were shown.

In XSLT2 you can define xpath functions with xsl:function which you
could then call just as you call sum.
