The environment is more or less out of the box.  As it turned out I was
not using Saxon on the web container, as I thought.  Interesting is the
big performance difference between using Xalan (>20 seconds) and Saxon
(~2 seconds).

There's something very wrong with the configuration of your tomcat
environment, but without more information it's impossible to say what.
