This relies on the fact that a serializer is simply an identity transformer from a SAX source to a Stream result:
TransformerHandler serializer = TransformerFactory.getTransformerHandler();
serializer.getTransformer().setOutputProperties(properties);
serializer.setResult(new StreamResult(System.out)):
xmlFilter2.setContentHandler(serializer);
