It may not work but it wouldn't generate an error, it is legal syntax comparing the name child with the name attribute and if they are not there they will just be "". So if you are getting an error then it must be in the part of the stylesheet that you are not showing. This is exactly the error you'd get if you used an AVT here, are you sure you are not running your first posted version?
