Do you mean

  test="not(@attribute)"

i.e. there is no "attribute" attribute, or are you testing if there is a child element "not" that has "attribute" attribute (which is what your example tested)? Anyhow -

Simply

  <xsl:template match="node">
    <xsl:if test="childnode">
      <!-- child node exists -->
    </xsl:if>
  </xsl:template>
