No.
Side floats will do it within a given column, but will not have influence beyond the column.

Basically, I would like to make the picture repel text.

Would a float do that, if the picture was wider than one column, intruding halfway into column 2?

What is the best way of 'intruding' an item into text, such that it repels the text like this?
