[xsl] node() as pattern

I'm having a problem understanding the use of node() in a pattern.

given a simple file (pretend no whitespace)

<doc>
  <nd1> ..</nd1>
    <nd2>..</nd2>
    <nd3/>
  </nd1>
</doc>

I believe I can get to any node using a node based pattern,

e.g. <xsl:template match='/node()[1]/node()[2]'>
should match on nd3

but my theory isn't working out.

Anyone got a nice clear description of what's happening
with such as 

match='/node()[2]/node()[8]/node()[2]/node()[8]/node()[7]'

please?

Mikes book, 432 tells me node() == ./child::node()
   
So with a stylesheet full of 'only' matches of this form, all
root relative, none of the templates are instantiated.
