BTW, the dot (.) syntax for context node comes from the XPath
specification (see http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath#path-abbrev). XPath is
used by XSLT, but it is a separate specification. Perhaps that is why
you have searched hard and come up empty handed.

Aside from the XPath specification itself, XPath is explained in several
good books. My personal favorites are XSLT Programmers Reference, 2nd
edition, Michael Kay, Wrox Press, and Essential XML, Don Box, et al.,
Addison-Wesley.
