when do we use the [ ] and when do we use ( )??

i have a basic doubt regarding conditions.. what is the difference between saying <xsl:if test = "not[. = mytag/mytext]">
and saying
<xsl:if test = "not(. = mytag/mytext)">
when do we use the [ ] and when do we use ( )??
