Actually, the XML Schema Primer (http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-0/) is a fairly good crash course and there's an XML.com series from Eric van der Vlist that you might find helpful at http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2000/11/29/schemas/part1.html.
