Except, of course, when it's part of a .// -- the crucial difference between these cases being much less subtle than it may seem. I think the fact that the difference between //node() and .//node() is so consequential, trips some new users into thinking node() and ./node() might be different, and they'd better "be safe" and say the latter. But the analogy is false, as a little research into XPath syntax and abbreviations will show.
