  Just to add to that - if you don't know what characters might be in
  the tag element value (i.e. can't write a string that holds them all),
  you could use the value itself as the first string, and use a *long*
  list of Xs as the second string:

    translate(tag, tag, $lots-of-Xs)

Of course if you don't want to take the risk of your $lots-of-Xs
not being long enough, you could generate it dynamically by looping over
the orgininal string, making X's as you go.....
