Mike,

thanks for the explanation. As Wendell pointed out I got confused
with the whitespace text nodes that were "invisible" to me. After
reading the relevant sections it became immediately clear what
was happening.

Meanwhile I installed the beta of Excelon Stylus Studio which helps
in visualizing the DOM tree.
