I think this is a very useful contribution.

As you might guess from the published requirements documents, there is an
activity underway involving the XSL and XQuery working groups to identify
XPath extensions that will be useful in both contexts, and the kind of
functionality you describe here will certainly be on the table for
discussion. For that reason, though, don't expect implementors to take your
suggestions up immediately.
