<xsl:apply-template select=/ROOTNODE/AnotherChildofRoot"/>that one child is, I would guess, the ROOTNODE element. So in order to make your plain old "ChildOfRoot" select statement work, you'd need a template rule which matches not on "/", but on "/ROOTNODE".
