another newbie question - date/time functions

My partner at work and I have recently been tasked with
learning XML and XSLT to see what it can do.  While we both
bought a copy of the new XSLT book, we can't seem to find
any references to any date/time extraction functions built
into the language.  Are there any and we totally overlooked
them?
