In fact, the failure to implement document() takes away one of the most powerful aspects of XML/XSLT, and it's really pretty analogous to a server-side include or an embedded database call (only cooler) so easy to understand for those of us who work under production time pressure and are used to more standard types of back-end programming for the Web.
