substring question

XML: <Consumer Comments="This is a test of the comments attribute."/> I am trying to display only the first 10 characters of the Comments attribute shown above, but have not been successful using the substring function - probably just a syntax problem, but I'm working with very little documentation for xsl and am very new to it.
