I suppose the XML part is dependent upon the architecture of your
editing/viewing application, but to interact with the system clipboard from
a Java program, you'll want to use the java.awt.datatransfer classes.  See
http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/docs/api/java/awt/datatransfer/package-
summary.html.
