You probably had the same problem I did some weeks ago. xt is doing as you ask, preserving white space, its just the way you look at it. Try looking at the output with a text editor, and hey presto its not a bug! The UA simply gets rid of the whitespace you kept. Remember, the computer does what you tell it, not what you want.
