I'm confused - are we talking about the "pattern-pi-target" issue? If so,
then you take it to mean something very different from my understanding.

I took it to mean the ability to enhance a pattern such that it would match
a particular (set of?) processing instruction - that is, a particular
instance of 'process-children' and the like. This doesn't seem to match your
description - there's nothing "nonportable" about it and it isn't an
"extension mechanism", just an extension to the current draft.

You seem to mean the ability to invoke some external processing mechanism
(hence "nonportable" extension mechanism)? Possibly involving some standard
scripting language (hence "portable")? This is a separate issue - I thought
the idea was to allow the use of JavaScript for such cases.

I expect that the objection on the ground of "complicating the XSL language"
was targeted at the first issue. The second isn't really "in" the XSL
language as such.
