The issue of what factors need to be present for a new technology to receive widespread acceptance- is this another permathread? "Relentless innovativeness" is certainly a species characteristic, but then, so is "insufferable complacency"...

It's oftn after they have taken a bigger step backwards,
seen the benefit, then wanted better. HTML leaps to mind.

But I once thought that C would never be displaced, and overnight Java came
along and everyone decided it was the next thing. I don't know why it
happens, but sometimes the industry decides to take a step forwards.
